The West of West Review: The Responsibility of the Collector →

“There is a school of thought that if somebody buys a piece, it is theirs; they can do what they want with it. But I believe that they do [have a responsibility to the pieces that they own]. One of the collector’s referred to himself as a “custodian” of the artwork and I’ve since had a number of other collectors come up to me after the opening and say, “You know, now that I’ve read what other collectors said, I feel the same way. I feel a responsibility to look after the artwork for the future.” You don’t take it to the grave with you. You own something like this but – whether you pass it on to a family member or sell it or donate it to a gallery – it’s going to outlast you. It needs to be cared for and respected. It is important for other people to see it and for it to go down through the generations instead of being wasted in this time and place.”

- Mary Jo Hughes, Chief Curator of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, discussing her latest exhibition: Victoria Collects. We got to sit down last week with Mary Jo to talk about collecting, selection, and art. To read the full interview, go to The West of West Review or just follow this link.
